I wish I had something wonderfully seasonal for you this week! But, the truth of the matter is I haven’t caught up to summer just yet. Things should slow down, however, when the kids come home from school and the in-laws are visiting, slow is not part of the equation! In fact, between clients, camps and play dates I am finding myself feasting on a bar in the car more days than not. I figure if this is my life, it might be yours too. So hopefully, I can offer some suggestions for healthy choices.
First of all, I recommend keeping healthy snacks on hand so that unusually busy days don’t rob your health plan. Not only are many prepared snacks healthier than the drive thru, but they are more economical too. I look for whole food choices that contain adequate amounts of protein and fiber. Eight grams or more of protein is ideal and 3 grams of fiber usually marks a pretty decent bar. Again, I look for whole foods rather than a long list of chemical additives like fractionated-oils and artificial sweeteners. Whole foods can include oats, rice, quinoa, dried fruits, seeds and nuts. Sometimes they contain added whey or soy protein, but those usually have more additives. Below you will find a list of my usuals. If you are like me…on the run…I suggest you hunt out some healthy bars or other snacks to fuel you as you go. Skipping meals is not a good option, and the drive thru can be tempting; so keep a bar in your bag as a back-up. When that tummy starts to growl, you’ll be glad you did!
