Frustrated with Fruit?

If you are like me, you remember the days of the summer and all the wonderful produce that was readily available to us and find yourself frustrated with fruit this time of the year. Don’t get me wrong, I do love citrus fruits and love the natural sweetness and convenience of the Cuties or Halos. However, I do miss the summer variety of fresh berries and melons. It is important that we not let our fruit consumption decrease due to the season.

It is recommended that we have 2 servings of fruit per day. A great way to reach the recommended amount of fruits is to try frozen fruit. Frozen fruit allows us to get the perfect ripeness of the fruit all year round. Contrary to what some believe, there are no added preservatives or sugars with frozen fruits. The freezing process keeps the nutrients in the fruits and they are literally “frozen in time.” According to recent studies, the nutrients in frozen fruit are comparable to fresh fruit.

There are so many things that you can do with frozen fruit:

  • Add to yogurt or cereal
  • Top cottage cheese
  • Add to mixes like pancakes or muffins
  • Include with smoothies

Here is a simple smoothie recipe that you can try that includes frozen fruit:

Simple Breakfast Smoothie

1 small banana (peeled and frozen)

1 cup frozen berries (can be strawberries, blueberries, or mixed berries)

1 small container plain Greek yogurt

¾ cup orange juice

Blend all ingredients together and enjoy for a quick breakfast!
