Hunger for the Holidays

This week we enter into the “holiday season.” Holiday decorations adorn store-fronts and seasonal foods and scents are flourishing in the markets. Most of us are beginning to consider our gift giving as well as our holiday menus. For some, however, the holidays pose one of the most difficult times of the year.

Food insecurity in the Piedmont Triad is ranked highest in our nation. Many are not aware that 20% of our population is considered food insecure and 67% of school-aged children in our community qualify for food assistance programs. During the holiday season, food insecurity worsens as heating bills rise along with other expenses. In addition, those school-aged children who are receiving reduced-price meals at school go home for weeks with little if any supplemental food.

If you would like to help reduce food insecurity this year, consider supporting one of the programs listed below. Whether you help as an individual or organize a group effort, you can know that someone will have a better holiday season because of you.
