Concord Grapes, Good and Healthy Too!

I was in the Fresh Market last week, and stumbled upon a treat. Concord grapes are in season! These polyphenol-rich fruits are powerful flavonoids (purple-blue foods) protecting the brain from dementia and the heart from arterial damage. Studies rank Concord grapes higher than blueberries and acai berries in anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-reducing power.

Now, I am not like most people. The nutritional value of food really increases my desire for it and vice versa (I wish it were so with everyone!). But, concord grapes are not only good for you; they taste delicious too. Their flavor is similar to the Muscatine grape, but sweet rather than sour. In fact, I ate the whole container on my journey home; but it is best to wash them first!

Most people only experience the Concord grape via grape jelly or grape juice. Juice is a better source of nutrients as no sugars are added; but I encourage you to try them fresh whenever you can. They are coming in season and will be available through fall, so keep your eyes out for this wonderful treat and be sure to include a bunch in your basket!

Below is a delicious recipe for Grape Pico De-Gallo, which is an amazing sweet and spicy condiment for chicken, pork, or fish. You can also use 100% Concord grape juice in a homemade snow-cone treat for yourself or the little ones in your life. Simply pour over shaved ice and enjoy!
